PupGauge started from a simple frustration: every “how big will my puppy get” answer online was either a vague guess or a decades-old rule of thumb with no science behind it. We wanted a tool that showed its work — a real range, built from a real growth model, with the sources listed so you could check them yourself.
What we build
PupGauge is a set of free calculators — a puppy weight estimator and a dog age calculator — built on published veterinary and nutrition research rather than folklore. Every number the calculators produce traces back to a named source, a stated derivation, or a clearly labelled PupGauge estimate. We lay out exactly which is which on our methodology page, because a range you can’t check isn’t worth much.
What we won’t do
We don’t use the “multiply by seven” rule anywhere on this site — it was never based on a real study, and it gets both ends of the size range wrong. We don’t present a single number as a guarantee; growth and aging are population patterns, not promises about any one dog. And we don’t dress up a guess as a fact. If the data doesn’t support an answer, we say so instead of inventing one.
Who this is for
New puppy owners trying to plan ahead, breeders and shelters fielding the same questions on repeat, and anyone who’s ever wondered whether their dog is “old” yet. Our guides go a level deeper than the calculators — covering growth, body condition, and life stages — for anyone who wants the reasoning, not just the result.
Our Editorial Standards
Every guide on PupGauge follows the same rules. Facts about growth, weight and aging must come from published research, breed standards or recognised veterinary guidelines. Numbers are always shown as ranges, not guarantees. Each page lists its sources, has a “last reviewed” date, and links back to the methodology page so you can see how an estimate was built.
- Research first. We start with studies such as Hawthorne et al. (2004) growth curves, the 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines and the WALTHAM puppy growth charts, then write in plain language.
- Original tools and examples. Our calculators and worked examples are built by us, so pages explain how to use the numbers and not only what they are.
- No medical claims. We explain general patterns. We do not diagnose or treat, and we point readers to a veterinarian for anything about an individual dog’s health.
- Corrections. If you spot an error, tell us. We check the source, fix confirmed mistakes and update the review date on the page.
Who Runs PupGauge
PupGauge is an independent publishing project. The content is written and maintained by the PupGauge editorial team and published under the author name Shahbazkhan. We are not veterinarians, and nothing here replaces advice from one. You can reach us on the contact page.
How the Site Is Funded
PupGauge is free to use. We may show advertising to cover hosting and development. Ads never change how we write guides or how our calculators work, and we do not accept payment to alter a calculation or a recommendation. Read how we handle data on the privacy policy and the terms of use.
